Quick Answer

**To answer "How do you handle stress?" give a method, a real example and a result. Say what you do when pressure builds (for example: list the tasks, agree priorities, tell people early), then tell a short story from work where you used that method, and finish with the outcome, ideally with a number. Do not say you never feel stress, and do not say "I work well under pressure" with no example.**

## What the Interviewer Is Really Asking

This is one of the most common interview questions, and it comes in several forms: "How do you handle stress?", "How do you work under pressure?", "Tell me about a time you had a tight deadline." The interviewer wants to know three things:

- Do you notice pressure early, or do you hide it until something breaks?
- Do you have a method, or do you just work longer hours?
- Do you communicate, so your manager and team are not surprised?

For non-native speakers there is a fourth, hidden test: the question itself can be stressful. A calm, structured answer in simple English shows exactly the skill they are asking about. If this question makes you nervous, read our guide to [interview anxiety for non-native speakers](https://app.mocklyenglish.com/blog/interview-anxiety-non-native-english-speakers) first.

## A Simple Structure: Method, Example, Result

| Part | What to say | Example phrase |
| ----------------------- | ----------------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Method (1 sentence) | What you do when pressure builds | "When several deadlines land at once, I list everything that is due and agree priorities with my manager." |
| Example (3–4 sentences) | One real situation from work, with your actions | "Last spring, a client moved a launch forward by two weeks…" |
| Result (1 sentence) | What happened, ideally with a number | "We shipped on the new date, with one feature moved to the next release." |
| Learning (optional) | What you do differently now | "Since then I flag risks in the first stand-up, not the last." |

If the question starts with "Tell me about a time…", it is a behavioural question, so use the STAR format (Situation, Task, Action, Result). Our [top 30 behavioural interview questions](https://app.mocklyenglish.com/blog/top-30-behavioural-interview-questions) has more examples.

## Sample Answers for Tech Roles

Use these as models, not scripts. Replace the details with your own story, and keep the structure.

Software engineer: a production incident

"When something urgent happens, I try to slow down for a minute before I act, because rushed fixes often make things worse.

For example, last year our payment service started timing out on a Friday evening. I was on call. First, I posted in the incident channel so everyone knew someone was working on it. Then I checked the recent deploys, found a configuration change that had doubled database connections and rolled it back. I sent a short update every 15 minutes, even when there was nothing new.

The service was back in about 40 minutes. On Monday I wrote the post-mortem and added an alert on connection count, so we would see the problem before customers did."

Data engineer: a deadline and a broken pipeline

"Under pressure, I separate what is urgent from what is important, and I tell people early if a date is at risk.

In my last role, the finance team needed a new revenue report for a board meeting, and two days before the deadline an upstream source changed its schema and broke our pipeline. I told the finance lead the same morning, explained the options and agreed that a correct report with yesterday's data was better than a late one. I patched the parsing for the new fields, and we backfilled the rest after the meeting.

The report was ready a day early, and we added schema checks so a change like that now fails loudly instead of silently."

Product manager or analyst: stakeholder pressure

"When I feel pressure from several stakeholders at once, I make the trade-offs visible instead of trying to say yes to everyone.

For example, three teams wanted their feature in the same release. I put the requests in one document with the effort and expected impact of each, and asked the head of product to make the final call in a 30-minute meeting. Everyone could see why one request moved to the next quarter.

We shipped on time, and nobody felt their request had been ignored. Now I use the same document for every planning cycle."

## Useful English Phrases for Talking About Stress

| To say… | Use… |
| --------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| You notice it early | "I noticed the timeline was at risk, so I…" / "I flagged it in stand-up." |
| You prioritise | "I separated what was urgent from what could wait." / "We agreed to cut scope on…" |
| You communicate | "I kept the team updated every…" / "I let my manager know early." |
| You stay calm | "I took a step back before changing anything." |
| You learned something | "Looking back, I would…" / "Since then, I always…" |

Insight

"I never get stressed." (not believable) · "I work well under pressure." with no example (empty) · "I just work late until it's done." (sounds like a burnout risk) · Stories where the stress was caused by your own mistake and you do not say what you changed.

## How to Practise This Answer

1. Pick one real story. Incidents, deadlines, migrations and difficult launches work well.
2. Write the method sentence and the result sentence in full. Put the example in 3–4 bullet points.
3. Say it out loud with a 90-second timer. Record it.
4. Check the verbs: past tense for the story ("I posted", "I rolled back"), present tense for your method ("I list", "I tell").
5. Ask someone to interrupt with a follow-up: "What would you do differently?" Practise answering in one or two sentences.

FAQ

## Questions

### What is the best answer to "How do you handle stress?"

The best answer names a method you really use, shows it with one real work example and ends with a result. For example: "When deadlines collide, I list what is due, agree priorities with my manager and update the team early. Last quarter that helped us ship a data migration on time while two people were on leave."

### Should I say that I don't get stressed?

No. Everyone gets stressed, so the interviewer will not believe it, and it suggests you have not thought about the question. Say that you do feel pressure and explain what you do about it.

### Is "How do you handle pressure?" the same question?

Almost. "Pressure" usually means deadlines and workload; "stress" can also mean conflict or uncertainty. Use the same structure: method, example, result. If they say "Tell me about a time you were under pressure", lead with the story in STAR format.

### How long should my answer be?

About 60 to 90 seconds. One sentence on your method, three or four on the example, one on the result and what you learned.

### What English phrases can I use to talk about stress in an interview?

Useful phrases include: "When things get busy, the first thing I do is…", "I try to separate what is urgent from what is important", "I flagged the risk early", "We agreed to cut scope on…" and "Looking back, I would…".
