Mockly English is three things:

1. Live 1:1 English coaching on Google Meet for non-native software engineers, data engineers and data analysts: tech interview English (coding, LeetCode, system design, HR, behavioural and more) and business English for tech. Coaches are practising data engineers who also teach English. Free 30-minute trial, no card needed. Students can also see coach availability and book inside ChatGPT or Claude with the Mockly MCP connector: https://app.mocklyenglish.com/ai.
2. Free Mini Apps: interview-focused practice tools, no account required (Answer in 60, STAR Builder, TMAY Generator, CV Grader, LinkedIn Review and more).
3. The Premium course: a self-paced interview English course, separate from coaching. It does not include a session.

Quick Answer

**To prepare for a job interview in English: learn the interview format, map the job description to 5–7 stories from your work, script a 60–90 second self-introduction, structure behavioural answers with STAR, and practise every answer out loud at a slower pace than feels natural. Grammar matters less than structure, clear examples and calm delivery.**

## Why interviews in English feel harder

Interviewing in a second language adds three jobs on top of the interview itself: you have to think under pressure, find the words, and control your pace and pronunciation at the same time. Most candidates try to fix this by studying grammar. That rarely helps in the room.

What helps is preparation that removes decisions in advance. If you already know how your self-introduction starts, which story answers a conflict question and which phrase you use when you need a second to think, your brain has more space left for English.

Key takeaway

Interviewers forgive small grammar mistakes. They do not forgive answers with no structure, no example and no result.

## The 10-step preparation plan

Step 1: Find out which interview you are preparing for

A recruiter screen (15–30 minutes) checks motivation, salary and basic fit. A hiring-manager round goes deep into your experience. Behavioural and panel rounds test collaboration and ownership. Technical rounds (coding, system design, case) test how you think out loud. Ask the recruiter: “Could you tell me a little about the format of the next round?” It is a normal, professional question.

Step 2: Read the job description like a checklist

Underline the required skills, repeated words and action verbs (lead, own, migrate, analyse). Each requirement is a question you will probably be asked. Write one example from your work next to each. Our guide to analysing job descriptions walks through this line by line.

Guide: [how to read a job description before the interview](https://app.mocklyenglish.com/guides/analysing-job-descriptions).

Step 3: Research the company with one goal

You are not memorising history. You are looking for one or two specific facts you can connect to your experience: a product launch, a market they are entering, a technology they use. “I saw you are moving to event-driven services; I led a similar migration at my last company” beats “I really like your company.”

Checklist: [company research before a tech interview](https://app.mocklyenglish.com/guides/research-a-company) and [a speakable “why this company?” answer](https://app.mocklyenglish.com/guides/why-this-company).

Step 4: Script your self-introduction

“Tell me about yourself” comes first in almost every interview, so it has the highest return on your time. Keep it to 60–90 seconds: who you are now, the background that matters for this role, what you are good at, and why you want this job. Write it, cut it, then say it out loud until it sounds like you talking, not reading.

Template: [tell me about yourself: a 90-second English script](https://app.mocklyenglish.com/guides/four-part-structure). Generate a first draft with the free [tell me about yourself generator](https://app.mocklyenglish.com/mini-apps/tell-me-about-yourself-generator).

Step 5: Prepare 5–7 stories, not 50 answers

Most behavioural questions are variations of the same themes: a conflict, a mistake, a tight deadline, a decision with incomplete data, a time you led without authority, a result you are proud of. Five to seven well-practised stories can answer almost all of them. Write each one as bullet points, never as a script you memorise word for word.

Step 6: Structure behavioural answers with STAR

Situation (one or two sentences), Task (your responsibility), Action (most of the answer, with “I”, not “we”), Result (a number or a clear outcome). If you have time, add what you learned. Aim for about two minutes.

Examples: [STAR method examples for tech interviews](https://app.mocklyenglish.com/guides/star-interview-framework) and [common behavioural questions with short STAR answers](https://app.mocklyenglish.com/guides/behavioural-interview-questions).

Step 7: Prepare strengths, weaknesses and motivation

Pick two or three strengths that match the role and prove each one with a single example. Choose a real weakness that does not block the core job, and explain what you do about it now. Prepare one or two sentences on why you are leaving and why you want this role.

Scripts: [what are your strengths?](https://app.mocklyenglish.com/guides/prove-your-strengths), [what is your greatest weakness?](https://app.mocklyenglish.com/guides/own-your-weakness) and [what sets you apart from other candidates?](https://app.mocklyenglish.com/guides/define-your-usp)

Step 8: Practise out loud and time yourself

Thinking an answer is not the same as saying it. Record yourself, time the answer (60–90 seconds for most questions, about two minutes for a STAR story), and listen back for filler words and long sentences. When you are nervous you speak faster, so practise slightly slower than feels natural.

Step 9: Prepare questions to ask at the end

Never answer “Do you have any questions?” with “No.” Good options: “What does success look like in the first 90 days?”, “What is the biggest challenge the team is facing right now?”, “How is performance measured in this role?” and “What are the next steps in the process?”

Step 10: Remove the logistics stress

For a video interview, test your camera, microphone and connection the day before and keep a notepad nearby. For an in-person interview, plan the route, bring printed copies of your CV and arrive ten minutes early. Small things you have already solved cannot make you nervous on the day.

## Common mistakes non-native speakers make

✅ Pros

- Short answers with one clear example
- Saying “I” for your own actions
- A number or outcome in every story
- Pausing instead of filling silence with “um”
- Asking for clarification when a question is unclear

⚠️ Honest Caveats

- Memorising answers word for word (it sounds robotic and breaks when the question changes)
- Long answers with no structure
- Saying “we” for everything, so your role disappears
- Apologising for your English
- Focusing on grammar rules the night before instead of practising out loud

If nerves about your accent or fluency are the real blocker, read [how to handle accent and fluency anxiety in interviews](https://app.mocklyenglish.com/blog/accent-fluency-anxiety-interview-english).

FAQ

## Questions

### How long should interview answers be in English?

Most answers should take 60–90 seconds. A behavioural STAR story can take about two minutes. If an answer goes past three minutes, cut the situation and keep the actions and result.

### Is it OK to ask the interviewer to repeat a question?

Yes. “Could you repeat the question, please?” or “Just to make sure I understand, you're asking about…?” is professional and much better than answering the wrong question.

### Should I memorise my interview answers?

No. Memorise the structure and the key facts of each story, not the sentences. Scripts sound robotic and break as soon as the interviewer asks the question in a different way.

### How can I practise a job interview in English alone?

Record yourself answering common questions with a timer, then listen back for structure, pace and filler words. Free tools such as Mockly's Answer in 60 seconds mini app give you questions to answer out loud.

### Does my accent matter in an English job interview?

Much less than most candidates think. Interviewers care whether they can follow you. Speak a little slower, finish your sentences, and stress the important words, especially numbers and technical terms.
