Mockly vs Engoo (2026): 25-Minute English Lessons or Tech Interview Practice?

Quick Answer

Engoo is the better choice for frequent, affordable 25 minute English lessons with tutors and daily news materials. Mockly is the better choice for rehearsing real tech interviews: one hour where a data engineer plays the interviewer for a coding, system design or behavioural round. The main difference is lesson length and content: general conversation versus full interview rounds.

  • Engoo runs 1-on-1, 25-minute video lessons with tutors, using its own level-based materials, including business lessons and daily news.
  • Engoo plans give you a set number of lessons each month; unused lessons do not carry over.
  • Mockly runs 60-minute live sessions in which the coach plays a tech interviewer, then corrects your English.
  • Engoo builds the habit. Mockly rehearses the interview.

General English Lessons vs Interview-Specific Prep

Engoo and Mockly both give you a real person on a video call, and both are 1:1. The difference is what the time is for.

An Engoo lesson is a general English lesson. You open a lesson from Engoo's library, which covers conversation, business, grammar, travel, test prep and a daily news section, and work through it with a tutor. It is built for regular, steady practice: Engoo's homepage headline is “Improve your English, anytime, anywhere”.

A Mockly session is a rehearsal for one specific, high-pressure event. The coach becomes the interviewer and runs a coding, LeetCode, system design, behavioural, leadership or HR round. Then the coach steps out of that role and goes through how you explained your solution, how you structured your STAR story, and which phrases made you sound unsure.

Insight

General lessons make your English more fluent. Interview practice makes your interview answers clearer. The first helps the second, but it does not replace it.

This is why many engineers who already take regular English lessons still struggle in interviews. Daily conversation rarely asks you to explain a cache eviction policy while someone questions your trade-offs, or to tell a two-minute story about a production incident with clear ownership.

How Engoo Works

These facts come from engoo.com and its Plans & Prices page, checked on 24 October 2026.

Lessons and tutors

  • One-on-one, 25-minute video lessons, online on mobile or PC, with no download needed.
  • Three plan types. Standard uses tutors who speak English as a second language. Premium Lite upgrades half of your lessons to native tutors. Premium gives access to all tutors, including native speakers.
  • Level-specific learning materials, including Business and Daily News lessons. A lesson called “Networking Tips to Help Build Your Career” sits in the Business section.
  • Engoo AI offers role-play scenarios so you can practise with AI before a lesson with a tutor.

Plan rules worth knowing

  • Monthly plans give you 8, 12, 20 or 40 lessons per 30 days and renew automatically. Six-month and 12-month plans are paid upfront.
  • Lessons you do not use in a month do not carry over to the next month.
  • You can hold one active booking at a time and book up to 15 minutes before the start.
  • Cancel at least 30 minutes before the lesson to get the lesson ticket back.
  • A monthly subscription can be refunded in full within 7 days of the first payment if you have not taken any lessons.

Insight

On the day we checked, Engoo's pricing page was running a limited-time discount of up to 50%. Because sale prices change, we do not quote a figure here. See engoo.com/plans for the current price of your plan.

Where 25 Minutes Runs Short for a Tech Interview

Twenty-five minutes is a good length for conversation practice. It is short for a technical round. A typical system design or coding interview runs 45 to 60 minutes, and the hard part is often the second half, when you are tired and the interviewer starts asking follow-up questions.

Here is what a full Mockly hour usually contains, according to the session format on Mockly's FAQ:

1
Intro and goal
You tell the coach which company, role and round you are preparing for.
2
The live round
The coach runs the round in real time: a LeetCode problem (agreed in advance or randomised), a system design on Excalidraw, or a set of behavioural questions.
3
Debrief
The coach gives you phrasing fixes, grammar and pronunciation notes, and ownership language for your stories.
4
Drill list
You leave with a personalised list of sentences and structures to practise before your next round.

You could ask an Engoo tutor to run interview questions with you, and for HR-style questions that can work well. What Engoo's site does not describe is technical interview practice: tutors are English tutors, and the materials are general and business English. Mockly's coaches work as data engineers, so they can push back on a design the way an interviewer would.

A Combined Plan: Engoo for Volume, Mockly for Rounds

If you have six to eight weeks before your interviews, the two services fit together without much overlap. Here is one way to split the work.

WeeksEngooMockly
1–2Short lessons several times a week to get used to speaking every day. Pick Business lessons on meetings and careers.Free 30-minute trial: a coach finds where your English breaks down and sets priorities.
3–4Keep the daily habit. Use lessons to practise describing your current job and projects. One session on “tell me about yourself” and your CV walkthrough; one behavioural round.
5–6Daily news lessons to stretch vocabulary and practise giving opinions.Technical rounds: a coding session thinking out loud, then a system design session.
7–8Lighter practice to stay fluent.Full mock rounds that match the loop you will actually sit.

A sample plan, not a rule. Adjust to the number of interviews you have.

Interview tip

Bring your Mockly drill list into your Engoo lessons. Ask the tutor to listen while you say the corrected sentences until they feel natural.

What You Pay (as of October 2026)

Pricing facts

  • Engoo: a monthly subscription with a set number of 25-minute lessons per 30 days (8, 12, 20 or 40), or a 6-month or 12-month plan paid upfront. The price depends on the plan type (Standard, Premium Lite or Premium) and any current campaign. Check engoo.com/plans.
  • Engoo: unused lessons do not roll over, and monthly plans renew until you cancel.
  • Mockly: a free 30-minute trial with a coach on Google Meet. No card and no subscription.
  • Mockly: live 60-minute 1:1 sessions are pay-as-you-go. One session is $50; packs of 5 ($237.50), 10 ($450) or 20 ($850) cost less per session. Credits last 12 months and work with either coach.
  • Mockly: Premium is the self-study course at $9.99/month, or $59.99/year, with a 7-day free trial. It does not include a coaching session and you do not need it to book one.

The pricing models reward different habits. Engoo rewards using your lessons every month. Mockly charges per session, so you can book three sessions in the week before a loop and nothing for the next two months.

Pros and Cons in Plain Words

Engoo is strong at volume and routine. Short lessons are easy to fit around a full-time job, and you can choose tutors and materials by level and topic. A large lesson library with business and news content means you will not run out of things to talk about. Its weaknesses for this specific goal: lessons are 25 minutes, tutors are English tutors rather than engineers, and the materials do not include technical interview rounds.

Mockly is strong at the interview itself. A full hour with a coach who works in data engineering means a real coding or system design round, with feedback on the English you used in it. Its weaknesses: it is not a daily-lesson service, each hour costs more than a short lesson, and with two coaches there are fewer time slots than on a large tutor platform. You also need about B1 conversational English before sessions are useful.

Bottom line
If your English is still the limiting factor in everyday conversation, start with frequent lessons on a platform like Engoo. If you can hold a conversation but interviews go badly, put your money into interview rounds with Mockly.

FAQ

Questions

Engoo lessons are 1-on-1 video lessons of 25 minutes. A Mockly session is 60 minutes, which leaves time for a full interview round plus a debrief.

No. Engoo's plan terms say you receive a set number of lessons per 30 days and any you do not complete are not carried over. Mockly session credits last 12 months from purchase.

It can help with general interview English, especially HR-style questions, and its Business materials include career topics. Its site does not describe coding or system design interview practice, which is where Mockly focuses.

Engoo's Standard plan uses tutors who speak English as a second language and its Premium plans add native tutors. For interview practice, the more important question is whether the person can run a technical round and correct your explanations, which is what Mockly's engineer-coaches do.
