Passing a Meta iOS Interview as a Non-Native Speaker

The Problem

He ran a small iOS team and was bored of it. Interviews had not been a habit for two years. He already knew he could get hired — Disney+ had made an offer — but Facebook was next, and an earlier Apple loop had felt unpredictable. Fluency, grammar, and vocabulary collapsed when he had to talk about architecture in English. He also wanted an Australia visa path, so spoken English had to work outside coding interviews too.

Before and After

Starting Point

His stack was Swift, with independent product work and previous Yandex experience. He asked for interview practice first, with iOS system-design material later if needed. The Facebook loop was the near-term technical target. Visa English for Australia, then a US trip, sat alongside the interview plan.

What We Practised

Sessions were interview practice, not a Swift course. After each mock he got English feedback on the same answer — where he stalled, which terms he approximated, and which sentences never finished.

The Turning Point

A Facebook-style mock asked him to walk an iOS feature end to end. He started in the view layer, jumped to networking, and lost the story. We locked a simple order: product scope, app structure, data flow, then trade-offs — and repeated it until follow-ups stayed inside that sequence.

The Result

He already had a Disney+ offer. Coaching was for the Facebook interview and for English that would also survive visa conversations. The gap was fluency under pressure, not whether he could ship Swift.

What He Would Do Differently

• Do not wait two years between interview cycles.
• Practise iOS design out loud, not only in code.
• Treat visa interviews as another English performance, not a separate skill.
• Reuse one spoken structure so an unusual loop cannot dump you.

Why This Matters for iOS Engineers Interviewing at Meta

Mobile loops still require 30–45 minutes of spoken design in English. Independent developers who ship every week can still sound unprepared if they have not narrated that work since the last job search. Fluency is the skill; Swift is assumed.
